Where the money actually goes with Astro

The Astro licence: Free and open source (MIT licence). That is not the cost. These are the charges a running Astro site attracts, each read from the charging vendor's own page on the date shown. They are alternatives and add-ons rather than a bill, so they are not totalled.

Which Astro plan should you buy?

Recommended Astro plan by situation
Your situationRecommendedWhy
You are building a content site, blog or documentationAstro on Cloudflare PagesThe licence is $0 and static requests are unmetered on both Cloudflare plans, so the running cost stays at $0 whatever the traffic.
Your site needs server-rendered or on-demand routesAstro on Cloudflare Pages, watching the Functions quotaFunction requests come out of the Workers quota of 100,000 a day on the free plan, which is the only thing that meters an otherwise unmetered site.
You want previews, build minutes and a team on one billNetlify Personal at $9 a month, or Vercel Pro at $20 a seatNetlify Personal includes 1,000 credits for one member. Vercel Pro is per seat and its Hobby tier is non-commercial, so a company site starts at $20.
Nobody on the team writes codeDo not choose AstroThere is no visual editor, so the real cost is a developer on retainer rather than a licence.

What Astro costs that no vendor publishes

The table above is every figure somebody will invoice you for. Two real costs are not in it, because nobody sells them at a list price:

  • A developer. Astro has no visual editor. Someone has to build the site and keep it building, and that is a salary or a day rate rather than a plan. We do not publish a figure for it, because we have no vendor page to read one from.
  • A CMS, if your content people do not write Markdown. Astro reads Markdown from the repository. If the people writing the content will not work in a repository, you are buying a headless CMS on top, and at that point Webflow is a fair comparison rather than a different category.

What you pay at renewal

Nothing changes. The MIT licence has no renewal, no seat count, no notice period and no contract to leave. The only figures that can move are the hosts’ own, which is why each row above carries the page it was read from and the date it was read.

Why we are not neutral about this

EveryAny.One is built with Astro and deployed to Cloudflare Pages, which is the arrangement priced in the first row of that table. We would rather state that at the point it is relevant than bury it in a footer. It is also why those two figures are the only ones on this page we can confirm from a bill rather than from a vendor’s page: the rest were read the same way every other price here is read.

Your requirements are probably different, and most organisations should not build their marketing site in code.
