What FreshBooks costs beyond the advertised price
Each of these is a figure you can check on the vendor's own page. The arithmetic is shown so you can redo it rather than take our word for it.
- Charged on top of a plan$480 a year
Payroll is charged on top of a plan rather than instead of one: $40 a month, which is $480 a year on top of whichever tier you hold.
Working$40 a month x 12 = $480 a year, added to a tier price rather than replacing it.

- Charged on top of a plan$240 a year
Advanced Payments is charged on top of a plan rather than instead of one: $20 a month, which is $240 a year on top of whichever tier you hold.
Working$20 a month x 12 = $240 a year, added to a tier price rather than replacing it.

Fixed mechanics above add $720 a year to the advertised price. Usage-dependent charges are listed but not summed, because a figure that depends on how much you use cannot be added to one that does not.
What FreshBooks actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | per month | $23 | $276 |
| Plus | per month | $43 | $516 |
| Premium | per month | $70 | $840 |
| Team Members add-onper user | per month | $11 | $132 |
| Payroll add-on | per month | $40 | $480 |
| Advanced Payments add-on | per month | $20 | $240 |
Cancelling FreshBooks, and getting money back
Read from the published FreshBooks terms on 18 September 2026. These are the terms, not legal advice: consumer law where you live may give you rights the terms do not mention.
| When you cancel | The account stays active and reachable until the end of the billing cycle. A confirmation email gives the last day of access, and a second one lands when the cancellation completes. |
|---|---|
| Changing mid-term | Downgrading part-way through a billing cycle generates a prorated credit applied against the next payment rather than a refund. Select plans, and the Payroll add-on, have to go through support. |

FreshBooks pricing against its competitors
Compared on the smallest invoice each vendor will accept, not on the advertised per-seat rate. Where a product has a seat minimum, the figure below is the minimum times the rate, because that is the cheque you would actually write.
| Product | Cheapest paid entry | Free plan | Against FreshBooks |
|---|---|---|---|
| FreshBooks | $23 a month | No | This product |
| Xero | $25 a month | No | +$2 a month (+9%) |
| QuickBooks Online | $38 a month | Yes | +$15 a month (+65%) |
Which FreshBooks plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You invoice five clients or fewer | Lite | $23 a month. Count your clients first, because client six forces the jump to $43 regardless of invoice volume. |
| You invoice up to fifty clients | Plus | $43 a month, and where recurring invoices and proposals arrive. |
| You need unlimited clients and project profitability | Premium | $70 a month, and the tier that answers whether a project actually made money. |
| You have team members | Add $11 per person to whatever tier you choose | Only the account owner is included. A three-person agency on Premium is $92 a month before payroll. |
| You sell physical products | Do not buy FreshBooks | There is no inventory management. QuickBooks Online or Xero instead. |
| Your team is larger than two people | Price Xero as well | Xero includes unlimited users, which can outweigh FreshBooks' better invoicing. |
The advertised price was 90% off when we checked
On 9 August 2026 the FreshBooks pricing page led with “Get 90% off FreshBooks for 3 months”, displaying Lite at $2.30, Plus at $4.30 and Premium at $7.00 a month, with the list prices struck through beside them.
The list prices are $23, $43 and $70 per month, and those are the figures recorded on this profile, because they are what you pay from month four onwards. The advertised savings - $62.10, $116.10 and $189.00 across the three months - are 90% of three months of each plan.
Promotions of this kind are close to permanent at FreshBooks, in the sense that there is usually one running. That does not make them fake, and it does mean the first-year cost and the steady-state cost are different numbers. Budget the second one.
Billable clients, not features, decide the tier
This is the constraint people hit:
| Plan | Price | Clients you can invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Lite | $23/month | 5 |
| Plus | $43/month | 50 |
| Premium | $70/month | Unlimited |
A consultant with six clients cannot use Lite, regardless of how few invoices they send. The step from five to fifty is also the step from $23 to $43 a month, so the middle ground is expensive for someone with seven clients.
Count your clients first. It determines your plan more reliably than any feature comparison.
Seats are charged, and that is the Xero comparison
The account owner is included; every additional team member is $11 a month. Payroll is $40 a month plus $6 per user, and Advanced Payments is $20 a month.
For a three-person agency on Premium that is $70 plus $22, so $92 a month before payroll. Xero includes unlimited users on every plan. If your team is larger than one or two people, run that comparison properly, because it can outweigh FreshBooks’ better invoicing.
Where it genuinely wins
Time to invoice. Track hours against a project, mark them billable, and generate an invoice that reflects them without retyping anything. Then let FreshBooks chase the payment with reminders and late fees you configured once.
For a business whose product is hours, that loop is the whole job, and neither QuickBooks Online nor Xero does it as smoothly. If your product is physical goods, neither of those observations matters and you want inventory, which FreshBooks does not have.

What this profile is based on
Nobody here has used FreshBooks. This profile is desk research: prices read from the pages cited below, on the dates shown , from one primary source , with 2 captures taken by us . How we research a profile.
Desk research from FreshBooks' own pricing page, read on 19 August 2026 through a United States egress. Nobody here has billed a client through FreshBooks, so the claim that tracked time becomes an invoice line without re-entry is the vendor's own description of its workflow rather than something we ran.
Where FreshBooks appears on this site
No buyer guide, article or other profile here references FreshBooks yet. Its own record is verified and dated, but it has not been placed against alternatives in a comparison, so there is nothing further to link to. Until then the category index is the best place to see what it sits beside.
