What Coda actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proper Doc Maker | per month | $12 | $144 |
| Businessper Doc Maker | per month | $33 | $396 |
Coda pricing against its competitors
Compared on the smallest invoice each vendor will accept, not on the advertised per-seat rate. Where a product has a seat minimum, the figure below is the minimum times the rate, because that is the cheque you would actually write.
| Product | Cheapest paid entry | Free plan | Against Coda |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notion | $10 a month | Yes | −$2 a month (−17%) |
| Coda | $12 a month | Yes | This product |
| Airtable | $20 a month | Yes | +$8 a month (+67%) |
Which Coda plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are evaluating whether docs-as-apps suits you | Free | Collaborative docs with size limits. Enough to build a real prototype. |
| One or two people build internal tools for everyone else | Pro | $12 per Doc Maker billed annually. Readers and form-fillers are free, so this is far cheaper than per-user pricing. |
| You need databases, unlimited automations and locking | Business | $33 per Doc Maker. Bought when the docs become load-bearing processes. |
| You mainly want to write documents | Consider Notion instead | Notion is better for writing and far easier for a whole team to adopt. |
| You need certainty about long-term product direction | Weigh the ownership changes | Coda passed to Grammarly and is now sold as Superhuman Docs. The product is still developed, but two changes in a few years is a fair consideration. |
Coda is now Superhuman Docs
Anyone evaluating Coda should know this before signing up. Visit coda.io/pricing today and the buttons
read “Get Superhuman Free”, “Get Superhuman Pro” and “Get Superhuman Business”, linking to
superhuman.com. The Superhuman homepage lists three products: Mail, Grammarly and Docs, and Docs is
Coda.
The lineage is that Coda was acquired by Grammarly, and Grammarly subsequently rebranded the company as Superhuman after acquiring the email client of that name. So the tool you may have evaluated as an independent product is now one of three inside a company with a different name.
We record this because it is a real consideration and not a criticism in itself. The product continues to be developed and the pricing has not jumped. But if you are choosing where to build your team’s processes for the next five years, two ownership changes and a corporate rename are legitimate things to weigh, and nothing on the Coda marketing site tells you plainly.
Per Doc Maker is the pricing idea worth understanding
Coda charges only for Doc Makers, the people who create and edit doc structure. Everyone who reads a doc, fills in a form, ticks a checkbox or comments is free.
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $12 per Doc Maker/month | $15 |
| Business | $33 per Doc Maker/month | $40 |
For the way these tools are actually used, that is a genuinely good deal. A fifty-person company where three people build internal tools pays for three seats, where Notion would charge for fifty. Run that comparison with your real builder count, because it is often the deciding number.
Where the power actually is
A Coda table is not a formatted list; it is data with formulas that reference other tables. A button can write rows, send a Slack message or call an API. Packs pull live data in from Jira, Google Calendar or GitHub and push actions back out.
The practical result is that processes which would otherwise be a spreadsheet, a form and someone’s memory can live in one document that actually enforces them. That is a meaningfully higher ceiling than Notion’s databases reach.
The adoption problem is real
Everything above requires someone to build it, and building in Coda is closer to light programming than to writing a document. Teams that succeed with it have a person who enjoys that. Teams that do not end up with two half-built docs and a return to spreadsheets.
Notion is worse at this and much easier to adopt, which is why it is more popular despite being less capable. Be honest about whether you have the builder before you pay for the tool that needs one.
