What Canva actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro1 person | per year | $15 | $180 |
| Businessper person | per year | $20.83 | $250 |
Cancelling Canva, and getting money back
Read from the published Canva terms on 18 September 2026. These are the terms, not legal advice: consumer law where you live may give you rights the terms do not mention.
| Refund window | None published |
|---|---|
| When you cancel | You can cancel at any time and keep premium features until the current billing period ends. |
| Changing mid-term | Canva states subscriptions are not refundable in most cases, but says it reviews every refund request and sometimes helps. Purchases made through the App Store are refunded by Apple, not Canva. |

Canva pricing against its competitors
Compared on the smallest invoice each vendor will accept, not on the advertised per-seat rate. Where a product has a seat minimum, the figure below is the minimum times the rate, because that is the cheque you would actually write.
| Product | Cheapest paid entry | Free plan | Against Canva |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma | $3 a month | Yes | −$12 a month (−80%) |
| Adobe Express | $10.99 a month | Yes | −$4.01 a month (−27%) |
| Canva | $15 a month | Yes | This product |
Which Canva plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You make occasional graphics and can live with the free library | Free | The free tier is genuinely large. Most casual users never need more. |
| You need Brand Kit, background removal and premium content | Pro | $180 a year for one person, and the tier that makes brand consistency practical. |
| Several people produce brand assets | Business | $250 per person a year, adding team brand controls and approvals. |
| You are doing professional interface or product design | Do not buy Canva | Wrong tool. Figma is the answer, and Canva will frustrate you. |
| You need precise print with colour management | Do not rely on Canva | Print output is adequate for everyday collateral but not for controlled colour work. InDesign remains the tool for that. |
The honest positioning
Canva is a production tool for people whose job is not design. That is not a criticism - it is the largest under-served group in the software market, and Canva serves it better than anyone. A marketer who needs 30 social variants by Thursday is Canva’s ideal user. A product designer building a component library is not.
What the free tier actually includes
More than most freemium products: the bulk of the template library, the editor, collaboration and 5 GB of storage. What you give up is the Brand Kit, background remover, premium stock and resizing a finished design to other formats. For an individual posting occasionally, free is genuinely sufficient.
The template tell
Because millions of people start from the same templates, Canva output has a recognisable look. Teams that care about this use Canva as a layout engine and supply their own photography, type and palette through the Brand Kit. Teams that do not end up looking like every other small business.
Canva or Figma?
They barely overlap. Figma is for designing interfaces and systems, with components, variables and developer handoff. Canva is for producing finished marketing assets fast. Plenty of companies run both, with different people in each.
