What Box costs beyond the advertised price
Each of these is a figure you can check on the vendor's own page. The arithmetic is shown so you can redo it rather than take our word for it.
- Seat minimum$60 a year
Box will not sell fewer than three Business Starter seats, so a single user pays $10 a month for Personal Pro rather than the $5 the business tier advertises - $60 a year more.
WorkingBusiness Starter is $5 a user with a three-user minimum, so the smallest business invoice is $15 a month. One user's cheapest route is Personal Pro at $10, which is ($10 - $5) x 12 = $60 a year above the advertised business rate.

- Monthly billing costs more$60 a year
Paying monthly instead of annually adds $60 a user a year on Box Business: $20 a month against the advertised $15.
Working($20 - $15) x 12 months = $60 a user a year.

Fixed mechanics above add $120 a year to the advertised price. Usage-dependent charges are listed but not summed, because a figure that depends on how much you use cannot be added to one that does not.
What Box actually costs over a year
A monthly price is not the same thing as a monthly contract. These are the plans above resolved both ways, per seat or unit where the plan is charged that way. Where a vendor quotes only a yearly figure it is divided by twelve rather than left out, and the Quoted column says which figure the vendor actually publishes.
| Plan | Quoted | Monthly | Over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Pro | per month | $10 | $120 |
| Business Starterper user, minimum 3 users | per month | $5 | $60 |
| Businessper user, minimum 3 users | per month | $15 | $180 |
| Business Plusper user, minimum 3 users | per month | $25 | $300 |
| Enterpriseper user, minimum 3 users | per month | $35 | $420 |
| Enterprise Plusper user, minimum 3 users | per month | $50 | $600 |
Cancelling Box, and getting money back
Read from the published Box terms on 18 September 2026. These are the terms, not legal advice: consumer law where you live may give you rights the terms do not mention.
| Refund window | None published |
|---|---|
| When you cancel | An account has to be cancelled no less than 30 days before the renewal date to avoid the renewal charge, and the subscription otherwise renews automatically at the then-current price. |
| Changing mid-term | Box holds a signed contract to its full term whatever the billing frequency, and its terms make everything prepaid and non-refundable, renewals included. A trial has to be cancelled by the end of the 14th day to avoid a charge. |

Box pricing against its competitors
Compared on the smallest invoice each vendor will accept, not on the advertised per-seat rate. Where a product has a seat minimum, the figure below is the minimum times the rate, because that is the cheque you would actually write.
| Product | Cheapest paid entry | Free plan | Against Box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dropbox | $9.99 a month | Yes | −$0.01 a month (−0%) |
| Box | $10 a month | Yes | This product |
| DocuSign | $11 a month | No | +$1 a month (+10%) |
Which Box plan should you buy?
| Your situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need retention policies, classification or DLP | Enterprise | $35 per user. Governance is the reason to choose Box over cheaper storage. |
| You need Box AI and Shield | Enterprise Plus | $50 per user, and the only tier bundling AI with the security tooling. |
| You share heavily with external parties | Business Plus | $25 per user with unlimited external collaborators, which is where Box genuinely excels. |
| You want unlimited storage for a small team | Business | $15 per user with unlimited storage, minimum three users. |
| You already pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace | Do not buy Box | OneDrive or Drive is already included, and is adequate unless you specifically need Box's compliance controls. |
Unlimited storage changes the comparison
From Business at $15 per user per month, Box does not meter storage. Against per-terabyte pricing elsewhere, that removes an entire category of planning and internal argument. For teams holding video, scanned records or long retention archives, it is frequently the deciding factor and makes Box cheaper than it first appears.
The tier where governance actually starts
Business and Business Plus are good collaboration products. The compliance capabilities that distinguish Box, retention policies, legal hold, classification and data loss prevention through Box Shield, arrive at Enterprise ($35) and Enterprise Plus ($50). If regulation is your reason for choosing Box, price those tiers, because the cheaper plans will not satisfy the requirement.
Box or Dropbox?
They look similar and are sold to different buyers. Dropbox optimises for the person moving files: better sync, smoother client, less administration. Box optimises for the organisation holding the files: permissions, retention, audit and external controls. A design studio will prefer Dropbox. A hospital or a bank will not have the choice.
The overlap problem, honestly
Most organisations already receive substantial storage inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and SharePoint has improved considerably. Box earns a separate line item when you have a specific governance requirement, heavy external collaboration, or an industry regulator with opinions about where documents live. Buying it as a general-purpose drive is how organisations end up paying twice.
